The Apartment is honored to present the first Canadian solo exhibition of art works by Matthew Higgs. Extrapolated from his ongoing immersion in printed matter, Higgs’ art appropriates pages of typography and book design, largely from contemporary art publications, which he isolates as individual framed images. His choices make for simple but resonate visual poetry. In these small gestures Higgs establishes a profound economy of means, not merely in his project of recycling printed material but through a reductive isolation which frees the images to grow a life of their own, free of their initial context and yet an able critique of the language and presentation of art. Known as one of the most erudite critics, curators and artistic producers of our time, Matthew Higgs’ art insists on looking again, observing and considering the formation and contextualization of culture in our time.
Please join us for a reception for this exhibition, Saturday, January 26th, 6-8pm. This exhibition will be available for viewing by appointment from January 26th to April 26th.
