Donald Urquhart, Thank You for Listening. April – June, 2009
The Apartment is pleased to present Thank You for Listening, the culmination of a year-long correspondence by British artist Donald Urquhart. That Donald is always up to something and he kept us in the know over the past year with intermittent postcards. The cards will be on exhibition for reading in their own little gallery, our bathroom.
Donald Urquhart is known internationally for his biting and irreverent writing, drawings and installations. Emerging from the frenzy of the late 80s London club scene, as a cabaret impresario and member of Leigh Bowery’s band Minty, Donald’s visual art first saw the light as posters and décor for his notorious club The Beautiful Bend. Hollywood film vixens, drag rivals and idols, popular kitsch and ladies of legend are sardonically rendered in hard edge black ink with an outstanding strength of line and compositional elegance. Urquhart has exhibited extensively including ICA, London (Beck’s Futures), White Columns, NY, Portikus, Frankfurt, Wattis CCA, San Francisco. Donald Urquhart is represented by Maureen Paley and Herald St., London.
